As I mentioned I am a 60-year-old kid at heart who happens to have Type1 diabetes. I was diagnoses when I was a senior in college and let's not do the math. I went through 5 years of denial which I am sure didn't help me at all. My symptoms were classic. Extreme weight lost, extremely thirsty, and going to the bathroom every 30 minutes. My mom notice that I dropped the weight and after she mentioned it, I notice that I was on the last notch on my belt.

When I checked into the hospital, my Blood Sugar (BS) was in the 800s. I believe the exact number was 840. The nurses were amazed I wasn't in a coma. Back then I had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks. The training is what you would expect in the mid 80's. Not the best. So, they turned me lose to finish out my senior year. Back in the day, college was all about drinking and carrying on. Not the best environment for a newly ordained diabetic. As a bonus I was kicked out of Army ROTC after they found out I was a Type1. I was scheduled for air assault school, but the good news is I didn't have to pay back 2 years of college.

After I graduated from college as everyone does, I got married. Then I remarried since the first time was so much fun. Been married now for 23 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. I have two kids now 19 and 13. Yes, we started kind of late with the kids. This might be part of the reason I have stayed active. My wife is amazing in so many ways, but related to this blog she realized I am happiest when I am on the trail. So for that I am enterally grateful.

My current diabetic systems I use.

Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring System and soon to switch to the G7

Omini Pods for insulin delivery

Insulin: Lyumjev (you try to pronounce that)

I am also on a pravastatin and Synthroid.

My A1C ranges from 6.7 to 7.1. Not great but decent.

My starting weight for training is 220 pounds. I really don't worry too much about my weight, but it will be interesting to see where it goes. FYI, my cardiologist states the same thing every time I see her. "Joe you are obese. You need to lose weight and have you thought about the South Beach Diet" Yes, she is 5'5" and can't be a 110 pounds soaking wet. I always ask what she had for lunch and it is something like a seaweed salad and some type crackers. Enough about her for now.

My cardiologist, endocrinologist, and optometrist are all top notch and keep me alive. I only see my primary care doctor about once every two years since I see everyone else so frequently.

All in all, I am JustJoe. That sums it up nicely.

Thanks and Pack Lightly

JustJoe
